We’ve worked with great clients and collaborators on some challenging projects.
When 2hD was established in 2003, the three directors brought with them a wide range of experience in structural, urban, architectural, web and interior design, from the education, heritage and commercial sectors. Working together we have built up a portfolio of projects which demonstrate some of that expertise whilst building our own way of approaching projects, supporting our clients and establishing an ethos for the practice.
Here are a few of our favourites…
Broadway School
As part of the nationwide programme Building Schools for the Future, 2hD were asked by Lathams Architects to work on the conceptual development of one of the exemplar designs — the renovation and rebuilding of an existing 1960s school to accommodate an additional 300 pupils on a tight inner city site, within a limited £15m budget.
The consortium that we were involved with won the bid for the Building Schools for the Future programme in Birmingham.

A cottage refurbishment
Our client called on 2hD’s advice before purchasing this three bedroom house. The property had been through a number of poorly thought-through adaptations, resulting in awkward access and underused space. After seeing our sketch ideas for an immediate refurbishment project and a future scheme to extend the property, our client went ahead with the purchase. We were able to provide an outline budget for our scheme that gave our client confidence: they knew that they could afford to buy and adapt the property — ending up with a profit should they chose to move on, or the ability to extend the house should they chose to stay.

The Sneinton Trail map
To tell visitors and residents the hidden story of the neighbourhood of Sneinton, a local social enterprise asked us to create a 3D visualisation of the area, where we also live and work. This formed the centrepiece of a printed brochure promoting a tourist trail around Sneinton’s historic attractions.

iHub competition
This joint entry team project, involving 2hD Architects, Boden Associates and Shared Design, provides a beacon for projecting creative thought through a strong formal and spatial presence, connected with the surrounding canal, road and cycle routes and characterised by a light ecological touch.

A painter's studio and home office
After retiring from his career as a journalist, our client needed additional space at home and asked us to design a new art studio that could also be used as an office for his freelance work. Our design was Highly Commended by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

A community business forum
We have always felt passionate about getting involved in our local community. The people at the Sneinton Business Forum share our ideal and are promoting the development of an inclusive and sustainable business community to help regenerate our neighbourhood of Sneinton, in Nottingham. We designed for them an accessible and flexible website that has become an essential platform for their action in the community.

Broadsheet trees
What do the people of Nottingham think about the built environment around them? How do they interact with it? What role do they have in the future development of the urban space in which they live? How do they imagine this future?
As part of Architecture Week 2007, we teamed up with people from Casciani Evans Wood to create an interactive exhibition that would voice the opinions and aspirations of the Nottingham people about their city.

A barn conversion in Dordogne
We were delighted when Mélanie and Béranger approached us to help them convert an old stone barn in South-West France into their new family home. This was the perfect project to combine our interests in sustainability, self-build construction and conservation.

A beach hut
Netker 10 (pronounced ‘net curtain’) was 2hD’s entry to the Bathing Beauties competition to design a landmark beach hut for the Lincolnshire seaside. The project allowed us to explore our interests in site, identity, materials and prefabrication. Great fun and we even got to play with models!

The Sky Vault Landmark
Winning by popular vote the Landmark for the East Midlands competition in 2001, Sky Vault was designed to embody the varied but collective identity of the East Midlands as we see it, its forward-thinking attitude, and to open people’s eyes to the region. To symbolise this, the non-hierarchical cablenet relies for its structural integrity on every steel member and on all the connections between them. The cables stand metaphorically for the various parts, strands and places in the region whilst the illuminated joints celebrate their connections in an open sculpture welcoming all.
