Meet our team

Tom Hughes

tom@2hd.uk — (+44) 0775 195 8003

Tom is an all rounder, our Director with a strong interest in technology, culture and community. A formative architectural experience came during time spent in Chile, where he discovered a deep appreciation of both the poetics and materiality of building.

After finishing his architectural studies with a specialism in building reuse, Tom joined the in-house architectural practice at English Heritage. A PhD followed, in the practice and theory of designing, building, and buying houses made of steel. Tom is also Director of Sneinton Alchemy, a community interest company working to support his (and 2hD’s) home neighbourhood.

At 2hD, Tom runs the Nottingham office, dealing with practice management, job running and community engagement.

Thibaut Devulder

thibaut@2hd.no — (+47) 94 98 40 98

Our Oslo-based Director Thibaut interweaves architectural design skills, engineering lateral thinking and a sharp eye for human needs in a wide range of design projects — from self-build housing and bridge design to permaculture and visual arts.

Thibaut originally studied construction engineering in France, before coming to Nottingham in 1999 to explore the bioclimatic design of lightweight architecture in his PhD research. He has been a regular visiting lecturer and tutor in several architecture schools in the UK.

At 2hD, Thibaut is managing our Norwegian office in Oslo. He is also our chief of all things technical — from computer modelling wizardry to sheep’s wool insulation — and our visualisation maestro.

Thibaut is also part of the Ooo-Ya-Tsu art collective.

Chris Heuvel

chris@2hd.uk — (+44) 0759 823 9263

Chris joined 2hD in 2015 as a Director, bringing a specialism in architectural project and practice management. Keen to build on our distinctive ethos, he is undertaking a DArch study at Nottingham Trent University into community engagement in architectural practice.

Chris has over 30 years of experience in several different kinds of architectural practice, and possesses additional qualifications in town planning, management and education. He also promotes ‘design technology’ – the integration of elegant detailing within an overall architectural vision. He is Fellow Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

At 2hD, Chris is taking on design review and quality management oversight. He has also set up an office in his home town of Norwich.

Alina Hughes

Former 2hD Director Alina hails from Bucharest, Romania, but has lived in the UK since 1991. She has experience in a wide range of architectural practice, from small scale conservation work to multi-million commercial projects. Recently, Alina has focussed on architectural education and research, having designed and run a new architecture degree at Nottingham Trent University. She is also past president of the Nottingham and Derby Society of Architects. Since leaving 2hD in 2015 to pursue new creative directions (particularly in the theatre), Alina has retained a strong association with the practice.
